Family Cemetery At Historic Rock Castle

More Found Pictures In My Archives

: I'm really excited because I have more than I thought saved to my Skydrive :

Historic Rock Castle in Hendersonville, TN.
Looking at the front of the mansion from the gate

View of fenced cemetery walking from mansion
Family cemeteries were very important during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This was especially true for an area that was considered the wilderness during this time. Starting with the pater familious, Daniel Smith, and then his wife, Sarah, family members were buried here on the farm property.
Gate to Smith Family Cemetery
Table-like markers for Daniel and Sarah Smith

Top of marker for Daniel Smith. Notice the pitting in the stone.

I tried to get a better shot here. You can barely read the inscription
"GEN DANIEL SMITH", "Born On the 22 of October 1748"
Top of marker for Sarah Smith. There is some pitting and chalking, but no where near that of her husband's.

Plaque at the entrance of the cemetery.

"SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF FIVE GENERATIONS"

Beautiful. Trees are growing up inside and near the cemetery.

"MURRAY"

"TABITHA DAUGHTER OF (HUGH ?)  S.E. SMITH BORN JUNE 4, 1863 DIED OCT. 15. 1872

Bottom reads "She was indeed a Metla ea in Israel lived and died a Christian"
From what I can find, "Metla ea" could mean "a woman that is wrapped up"

"John d. Wherry"

"In Memory of Col. George Smith Born 12th May 1776 Died 15th Feb 1849

"In MEMORY OF TABITHA BUGG DAUGHTER OF COL GEORGE  & TABITHA SMITH
WIFE OF ANSELF D. BUGG BORN NOV. 13 1803 DIED SEPT 13 1869"

"HARRY SMITH BORN OCT. 19. 1806. DIED JULY 10. 1828
----
SALLIE E WIFE OF H. SMITH BORN JAN 2. 1837 DIED OCT. 20. 1863"
